"The budget should be balanced, the Treasury should be refilled, public debt should be reduced, the arrogance of officialdom should be tempered and controlled, and the assistance to foreign lands should be curtailed lest Rome become bankrupt. People must again learn to work, instead of living on public assistance."

--- Cicero

Lesson 8 - Human Action Print E-mail

The fundamental reason that we are concerned with the abstract concepts of freedom and liberty, is that we wish to find ways and means of enhancing, or maximizing, human well-being.

Enhancing human well-being is not a process of designing a Utopia for all, and then putting everyone into it. Perfection is an elusively unattainable goal.

The process of enhancing human well-being, and advancing human freedom therefore, is a process of understanding the fundamental nature of the human, and the nature of human action.

All living beings must act! If a human being becomes absolutely non-active, he or she is no longer living. Our concern, therefore, must be what acting human beings do, why thy do what they do, and how they do it.
