Lesson 19 - Basic Instinct Print E-mail

In this area of desire or want, we may be dealing with what we may refer to as a basic instinct.

Instinct is defined as an "inborn pattern of activity and response common to a particular biological organism", or "an inate impulse or natural inclination or tendency".

More simply, an "instinct" is an automatic or driven response to stimuli that an organism seems to be born with, as opposed to a response or behaviour that must be learned after birth.

As a biological organism, humans appear to have a common inborn or inate tendency to satisfy his or her wants in terms of an individual drive toward gain.

In humans, this apparently inborn tendency does not result in a single form of behavior or response (due to the human individual's rational ability to subjectively evaluate data), but the various resulting behaviours or responses do appear to be derived from a common drive toward gain.
