Page 9 of 9 The individual seeking the approval of others will not innovate, he or she will emulate, conform, and try to please others. He or she will be group-oriented, and will conduct his or her affairs where the group will respond. He or she will seek to conduct him or her self in terms of what others want. When an individual seeks self-approval, he or she might very well be an innovator. He or she will not necessarily conform to the expectations of others. He or she will place his or her value of self at so high a point that he or she would rather be right and adhere to his or her ethical values than attempt to win accolades from others. He or she may run counter to current popular belief. In this frame of mind an individual will run risks, become an adventurer. He or she may provide risk capital, try to set up a new business, or possibly journey to the ends of the world or space to prove a point. He or she will seek to conduct themselves in terms of his or her own objectives. What we see is that while the specific pattern of behavior may vary from case to case, and from person to person, it can always be traced back to one or another of the four fundamental motivational desires: to promote gain, to prevent loss, to win approval of one's self, or to win the approval of others.
