"The Constitution is not an instrument for the government to restrain the people, it is an instrument for the people to restrain government. "

Lesson 30 - Slavery and Freedom Print E-mail

Typically, in a situation of slavery the responsibility of the slave over him or her self is presumed to vanish. The slave master assumes full responsibility for his or her slave.

The slave is considered to be a piece of property belonging to the slave master. And, like any other property, the slave master is responsible for what he or she owns.

When a condition of slavery exists, it is presumed that one or more persons will act to control one or more other persons. This relationship is not one of human equality, it is one in which one man (or woman) is held to be intrinsically or morally superior to the other.

In a condition of freedom, each individual is considered to be morally equal to every other man and/or woman. No one is held to be intrinsically superior, or inferior, to any other.
