Page 6 of 9 Similarly, those who criticized the rebels with their long hair, were just as keenly interested in winning or maintaining the approval of their short-haired peers, as they were in defying those in revolt. Individuals in both groups actively sought the approval of others. Actually, each human being does this all the time. Were this not the case, a market where goods and services could be exchanged would probably be impossible. It is absolutely essential to trade that each producer or purveyor of goods or services actively and continually win the approval of his or her customers. Sellers of goods and services must at all times be concerned with the approval of others, and must continually seek to anticipate what others will want that they will pay for (an economic indication of approval). Failure to win this approval of others in this manner will certainly lead to the ultimate demise of any enterprise. Approval of SelfIn addition to seeking the approval of others, we find that each individual seeks self-approval. This desire for self-approval is so basic and fundamental to our natures that it might well be listed first. Every human being must think well of him or her self to some degree. The individual who blames himself or who holds a dislike of himself in his mind because of some wrongful action he might have taken, loses approval of himself.
