Page 7 of 9 If this disapproval of self persists, the individual will become depressed and might even become mentally unbalanced. It is absolutely imperative that every human being think well of him or her self! Self-hate or self-loathing will destroy a mind. It is important to note that there is a difference between thinking well of one's self and being conceited. There are many reasons why an individual might become dissatisfied with him or her self. One might be disappointed in his or her appearance, skills, mental capacity, or behavior. No person is all bad and, equally, no person is all good. The person who is balanced in their outlook approves of himself overall, and can find reasons for this approval. He or she will see good points that will tend to compensate for the bad points. If a person's view of his or her self is predominately negative, they might actually make themselves ill. If, on the other hand, a person's view of his or her self is so elevated that he or she can detect no flaw, the chances are good that he will annoy others who will resent his or her pretensions.
