"Liberty is the soul's right to breathe; and when it cannot take a long breath, laws are girdled too tight."

--- Rev Henry Ward Beecher

Lesson 22 - Profitable Motivations Print E-mail

A common error is to suppose that profit means a profit only in money, or other property. That is not at all what is meant here. A financial or economic profit is very far removed from the minds of many men and women who seek profit.

All human beings are profit-oriented, or profit-motivated, if you understand that what they are seeking are the situations, or goods, or relationships, or approvals, that they view in some way as desirable and profitable to them.

Every human being has a limited amount of time, energy, and talent. No one ever has infinite time, energy, or ability.

Because none of us is infinite, and none of us is immortal, we all have a basic, underlying sense of uneasiness. We act in an effort to eliminate, or at least reduce, that sense of uneasiness.

This is to act in search of profit. We seek to avoid loss. That is profitable behavior. We seek to make gains. That is profitable. We seek the approval of others. That is profitable. We seek to think well of ourselves. That is profitable. There is always a "plus" factor (a desire to gain) in our volitional (voluntary) behavior.
