Page 6 of 7 Generally, when we are being told that "sacrifices" are required in order to advance such-and-such a cause, what is happening is that the person or group doing the telling is attempting to impose their perception of value over your own, by infering that theirs is the purpose of higher value. Some may in this way attempt to appear to others to be acting as something of a martyr, in order to elicit sympathy and affection from others. Some like to show others how great their values are in that they helped someone else other than themselves. The sense of approval that we get from ourselves or others in this case is part of the profit we anticipate receiving from the action. The sanction of dis-approval is part of the threat or coercion that forces our participation in an otherwise un-profitable exchange.. Sacrifice indicates a taking, a loss, or a un-voluntary giving-up, of something that is valued more highly by the person losing it. All so-called sacrifice is nothing more than theft, justified as being motivated by some "higher" or holy purpose. Since all voluntary exchanges involve at least a perception of profit or gain for the participants, you cannot, in absolute terms, suffer a true loss from your exchange of something you value less (at the moment) for something that you hold in higher value.
