Page 3 of 3 Freedom is not utopia. Freedom is a concept, and an ideal, rooted firmly in the unchanging principles of objective reality. Its purpose is the discovery of ways and means by which human well-being can be maximized. We might not always have the clearest sense of how this well-being might be best achieved, but we ought to have some sense for those actions that will work in opposition to, and undermine, our efforts. What is clear is that the methods by which one seeks to advance freedom, are vastly different from those methods by which one destroys freedom. We must learn to distinguish between these methods, or we will slip backward into the presumption that freedom is a privilege to be granted or withheld by those in power, and not a birthright. Freedom is the natural, inherent, inalienable right of each individual, whether there is a political entity or not. The methods of tyranny are the enemy of freedom. Go to next lesson ... >>
